The Workshop

If the truest sense of documentary is to transport the viewer to a particular time and place beyond where they'd normally go in their ordinary lives, and introduce them to people they otherwise wouldn't meet, and capture on film the unfolding of life and human experience, then The Workshop is a success.

Yes, it is about a 10-day New Age retreat in Northern California. And yes, it had nudity. Yes, it discusses adult situations--monogamy, marriage, and sexuality. These issues, deeply rooted in our culture and Christianity, cause many viewers to flag this film as offensive, morally corrupt, and self-absorbed. And, to a point, that is part of the beauty of this film.

In The Workshop, individuals who feel lost in their current lives and are seeking some form of guidance turn to silver-haired British guru Paul Lowe. Some viewers may pity them, but filmmaker Jamie Morgan does not. He presents a candid "behind the scenes" to the retreat of which he is both observer and participant. At times he turns the camera on himself (a la Ross McElwee in Sherman's March) but mostly he allows the camera to be a voyeuristic eye, meeting many of the participants of the retreat and following their emotional journey as they attempt to break down their preconceptions, social conditioning, and self-defeating attitudes.

There are both humorous and tender moments. There is self-conscious performance for the camera and also genuine candid human interaction, including jealously, anger, and affection.

Despite the low-rez digital camera, the shots of a couple nude in a swimming pool at night are some of the loveliest in any film since the 1934 classic Tarzan and His Mate.

Do the participants of the workshop find happiness and joy and all the answers they sought--no, not exactly. What they do find is a better appreciation of themselves, and others, for all their beauty and flaws. Taken in the same spirit, this documentary, with its flaws and its truly beautiful moments, is something special.

Sexy Time at Local Nude Beach

What's sexier than a day at the beach?
--A day at a nude beach.

What's sexier than that?
--When the conversation turns to sex.

What's sexier than that?
--When talk turns to action.

Even though the  beach was crowded with men and women, old and young, and all strangers, she decided to take his cock into her mouth.

What's sexier than that?

She then reached over and began to fondle his best friend.

FRIENDS AT THE BEACH

CAMPING, EURO STYLE

We were camping and had found this perfect spot all to ourselves. We were seriously annoyed when a couple pulled up in a bright yellow car and proceeded to unpack a table and set up a tent not more than 20 yards away from our spot. I wanted to tell them that this was the US, a country based on the idea of people spreading out, and not crowded Europe. But I changed my mind when I realized that there European concept of camping meant not worrying about being clothed all the time.

GOING EUROPEAN

When Kate was in Spain, she enjoyed going European.
American women, she realized, had too many hang-ups about their bodies. She liked being able to just kick back and be herself. It felt good. It felt healthy.

PDX--World Naked Bike Ride 2010!

Portland, Oregon, might have set a new world record this past Saturday, when an estimated 14,000 people grabbed their bikes and stripped off their clothes for the annual Naked Bike Ride.

Thousands more lined the streets, cheering. People who watched say it took about 30-40 minutes for all the riders to pass by. At each intersection along the route, police blocked traffic. Some waved, some smirked. Some folks along the route stripped naked in solidarity. Many flashed cameras, and texted friends that they'd just seen more bare butts and boobs than they'd ever seen in their lives.

It was truly a memorable event, a new world record, and for yours truly, a new life experience.

SPRING BREAK, MEXICO

My laptop recently crashed so I asked my girlfriend if I could borrow hers to check email. She must have been very trusting, or thought that she didn't have anything to hide. Of course, the first thing I did was look at her browser history and bookmarks. I couldn't find any indication that she'd looked at any porn, which made me sort of sad. In some ways, I was hoping to find out some sort of little hidden secret sexy side to her.

I started snooping in her photo folders. Most were pretty boring, and I hate to say, were of her cat. She had literally hundreds of photos, of friends, family, vacations. They were all so standard, so regular. The typical point the camera, make a face, or go to city and shoot the typical tourist sites. I found one folder that was really old named spring break Mexico. I almost didn't dare open it, because that was long before we were dating, and I didn't want to find any images of my girl with another guy.

Looking at someone's private photos is like a pandoras box: once you start, you can't stop, and what you find out could destroy you. Luckily, among all the stupid shots of her and her girlfriends sipping giant margaritas and trying to wind surf and pictures of palm trees and the hotel they stayed at and ferry boat they took, I found one image, one single revealing image of her and her friends on a white rock beach, topless, posing for the camera.

At first glance, it seemed a relief. It was a fairly safe image, and my eyes immediately went to the girl on the left (not my girlfriend). I found her very hot. Then I looked at the girl on the right, and noticed her lovely breasts. So full and firm in those college years! That's when I noticed my girlfriend's hand, wrapped around her waste, holding the girl's hand. Was it just friendship? Was it just for the pose? Or maybe more? I had expected to find a series of images of her with a college boyfriend. What if there was a reason she didn't have a boyfriend that year?

Maybe she did have a secret in her past. I was dying to find out, but didn't know how to ask without revealing that I'd snooped in her private photos.

NAKED @ CAMP

There was a YWCA camp I went to as a kid on the Oregon Coast in the 70s. It wasn't a nudist camp, or at least it wasn't officially a nudist camp, but a clothing-optional culture had developed. It wasn't like someone officially decided that nudity woudl become part of the Westwind experience. No one really knows how it started, but in the late 60s, a lot of people at Woodstock, or the Vortex concert, or Golden Gate Park, had gone naked publicly. People who had lived on communes were accustomed to shed their clothes with warm weather. Nudity was definitely associated with the counter-culture, but in the 70s it was less rebellion and more a "back to nature" zeitgeist.

One of the camp sessions was just for mothers with very young children. It was a retreat for them and a fun treat for their kids. So it'd be common to see naked toddlers playing in the sand, splashing in the water, and a mother strip down to skinny dip to play life guard, or layout and soak up sun. Since it was all women, and none of it sexual, no one seemed to care. It was like a women's gym locker, just outdoors and scenic. Since the mothers and the young kids did it, a lot of times, the counsellors (may who had been campers themselves) went au natural on the hot afternoons, at the beach, or laying out on the deck. Or just hanging out in the cabins.

I was a young girl then, but I remember it with fondness. The women came in all shapes and sizes. and so I never grew up to think the body was ugly or shameful. As a result, I never developed an eating disorder in high school, and never let anyone make me feel bad about the shape and size of my breasts or my hips. The 70s might have been a little reckless in drugs and had other drawbacks, but I really do miss that sense of acceptance of the human body as natural. Things are so much more conservative today, and our daughters at camps are not able to just be themselves as we were. And I worry for them.

CUTE GIRLFRIEND AT BEACH

Seriously, this girl could not possibly be cuter! Coy, yet confident, a Mona Lisa smile.

What's her secret?

If you look closely, you'll notice this isn't a nude beach.

A POSITIVE MESSAGE

WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR?

THE WOMEN OF THE DEEP BLUE SEA

The women in the office all dared each other to do the city's famous annual naked bike ride. Peer pressure, and blue paint, helped steady their resolve.

They picked a theme: Little Mermaid, Under the Sea. They were giddy, but terrified when they put on the body paint in the morning, but after the ride, they were truly jubilant. Although they would normally consider themselves self-confident, strong, and adventurous women, getting naked and riding through their town in nothing but blue paint and tennis shoes was pushing all of their personal comfort zones.

When it was all done, they celebrated their victory together, not the accomplishment of the ride, but of riding past their inhibitions, their fears, and the inner voice that said, "stay in the comfortable and familiar, be safe, be good, do what you're told, don't break rules." For some, their were deeper voices, darker ones that had told them for years: "you're not pretty enough, you're body is bad, you should be ashamed, cover yourself." Being naked was a physical act, but the reward was an emotion: joy, and pride, and strength. On that day, all the negative inner-voices were silenced, replaced with a single affirmation: we did it.

IT TAKES TWO

We were all drinking around the beach bon fire. He kept going on and on about how the only way to really learn to tango was to do it naked. Elizabeth knew tango and she disagreed. "Have you ever tried?" he challenged. She laughed him off, but he insisted. "You can't dismiss it if you've never even tried!" We were all feeling the warmth of the fire and the wine. And soon everyone was egging on Elizabeth to try. We were all friends, and Elizabeth seemed to be laughing as much as anyone--it wasn't mean peer pressure, just silly. In fact, we could tell, she just needed a little prompting. And she did.

"Ok," she said, "show me what you got."

Elizabeth and Gary put on the best naked tango dance we'd ever seen, and probably ever will.
LOST TOURIST?

Nudity can be funny when taken out of context.

PDX!

Paris, Hemingway said, is a moveable feast. He was a young man in Paris when he was working on his first novel, the Sun Also Rises, surrounded by writers, painters, photographers, filmmakers... sounds like Portland today.

ART INSPIRES!

In our city, any project built with public funding must set aside 1% of the budget for public art. I think if every company, and every person set aside at least 1% of their budgets to supporting or making public art, the world would be a much better place. Art has the ability to inspire us, and brighten our days. Who could argue with this lovely example of nude inspired by nude.
