Panayiotis Lamprou: the casual power of an intimate portrait

This is a reposting of an article originally written by Sean O'Hagan for the Guardian. It is one of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking articles we have ever read. Our sincere appreciation to Mr. O'Hagan for his work and we hope by helping the dissemination of this work, the conversation is carried to wider circles, resulting in deeper and more meaningful conversations around this topic.

Lamprou's Portrait of My British Wife – on the shortlist for this year's Taylor Wessing photographic portrait prize – is a private moment made public. But when does art become voyeurism?

Photographers have taken explicit photographs since the invention of the form. It is still a surprise, though, to see Panayiotis Lamprou's image, Portrait of My British Wife, on the shortlist of this year's Taylor Wessing photographic portrait prize. It is, as the Guardian's arts correspondent, Mark Brown, put it (perhaps understating the case somewhat), "arresting because of its intimacy". It begs the vexed question, when does art become voyeurism or, indeed, pornography?
Lamprou photographed his wife sitting outside their summerhouse on the Aegean island of Schinousa. She has just finished eating an omelette and the dirty pan sits on table at her elbow. She is staring at the camera with a gaze that is difficult to read, wearing a short dress – or long T-shirt – and nothing underneath. Her legs are apart and her vagina is visible beneath the skirt. There is something both coy and provocative about the portrait, which, according to the photographer, was not originally intended for public display. (What changed his – and her – mind?) It will be interesting to see how the National Portrait Gallerydisplays the image when they exhibit it in a show of 60 of the submitted portraits in November.

Undoubtedly many visitors to the gallery will find the image shocking, even offensive. Ironically, its tone of languor and intimacy sets it apart from the other three shortlisted portraits, all of which are provocative in different ways. Indeed, both Jeffrey Stockbridge's portrait of Tic Tac and Tootsie, twin sisters who have turned to prostitution on the streets of Philadelphia to fund their drug addictions, and Abbie Trayley-Smith's portrait of a young girl at a charity for obese children, could be considered more voyeuristic and exploitative.
Lamprou's portrait, though, cannot use the defence of social documentary or reportage. It is a private, intimate moment made public and, however consensual the contract between photographer and subject – and husband and wife - much of its arresting power lies in this uneasy dynamic. Do we, as viewers of what was originally an intensely private exchange, become voyeurs?
Lamprou's intimately explicit portrait is a very different kind of photograph than, say, the formally driven Teutonic female nudes of Helmet Newton, the hardcore imagery of Robert Mapplethorpe or the garish art-porn of Araki. Neither does it fit into the fashion-porn genre indulged in by the likes of Terry Richardson. Again, it is the intimacy of the setting – and the fracturing of that intimacy – that sets it apart and may even, for some viewers, make it even more problematic.
In both its explicitness and its blurring of the boundary between the private and the public, Lamprou's portrait calls to mind the taboo-breaking work of the young American photographer, Leigh Ledare. His book, Pretend You're Actually Alive, is a visual and written portrait of his mother, an erstwhile exotic dancer, who is both a narcissist and an exhibitionist. Over the years, he has photographed her in various explicit poses, both alone and with a succession of younger lovers, and the titles alone - Mom Spread With Lamp (2000) – give some indication of the content.
When Nan Goldin included Ledare's work in her selection for theRencontres d'Arles Festival, last year, it caused considerable debate among visitors, many of whom found it either offensive or disturbing. (Ledare, for the record, is a charming, well-balanced individual, and the book does work, in an albeit disturbing way, as a fractured chronicle of a thankfully singular strain family dysfunction.) It does beg the – now quaintly old-fashioned – question, are some things better left to the imagination than the camera? Or, more pertinently, the gallery wall?
Interestingly, too, it is nearly always women who are the object of the camera's gaze in these provocative photographs. (Mapplethorpe, a gay man, and Richardson, a self-confessed exhibitionist, both turned the camera on themselves, but they are the exceptions.) Would, one wonders, a full-frontal photograph of a relaxed, sun-dappled Lamprou taken by his wife be as arresting or provocative?

What strikes me most about Lamprou's portrait – apart, of course, from its explicitness – is its apparent casualness. It has none of the heightened formal power of David Chancellor's portrait of a 14-year-old girl astride her horse with a dead impala. Instead, it looks, at first glance, like a holiday snap – but that, too, is part of its odd, and confusing, power. The dirty pan, the cluttered table, and the blurred chair in the foreground are all familiar signifiers of that certain feeling of relaxed torpor that descends on us when we settle in to a holiday. It's just that the eye is drawn elsewhere; we are given licence to look, to linger, to transgress the boundary between the accepted and the forbidden – at a cost, perhaps, to all of us, the photographer, the subject and the viewer … and to our ever-shrinking imaginations.

On Desk

Not entirely sure why she's standing on her desk, totally nude. Does she have a neighbor?

Looking Outside In

They knew with the lights out no one could really see into their apartment, but they could see out. They could watch people in the building opposite them doing dishes, watching TV, etc. It seemed so much more erotic to know that while the neighbors went innocently about their various daily lives, they were fucking. She loved being pressed to the window and fucked in the back. He'd pinch her nipples, or rub her clit, or spread her lips wide. The more lewd it was, the hotter it was that no one could see, but almost could. Darkness is the thinnest of curtains.

Beach Glimpse

She had been laying back on the beach, when she glanced up. She was fully dressed, but her knees were bent and legs open. She wasn't thinking about how she was sitting, and didn't realize how much she was exposing. Or maybe she did.

Wedding Photog

As a professional wedding photographer, Holly had seen a lot of things. Unfortunately, mostly she saw brides breaking down and throwing tantrums, or puking at receptions from too much to drink. And there was always always always one of the groomsmen hooking up with one of the bridesmaids.

Holly hadn't started as a wedding photographer because she loved weddings. She loved documentary photography. But the fact was, weddings paid. A lot.

She was hired to shoot for an entire day, or late into the night. With powerful memory cards, her DSLR could literally shoot 1000s of images. She captured it all. Often without people even noticing. With long lens and a trained eye and hand, she could snap a telling moment in a split second. That's what they paid her for.

Even when she captured a groomsman feeling up a bridesmaid, somehow it still had the look and feel of her other wedding images, the same as cutting the cake, or exchanging rings. She realized, though very quickly, to never show the client what actually happened at their wedding, but only what they want to remember happening. Weddings are a story we tell ourselves, and we never want the truth to get in the way.

GIRLS SHOWER, BOYS WONDER

In high school, we all wondered what it would be like to be a fly on the wall in the girls' gym shower. We spent so much time and energy and creative powers imagining.

LATE NIGHT ON CAMPUS

I was walking across campus late one night, past the back of the art studio building, taking a short cut, when I looked up and noticed one of the lights still on. There was a girl in the window, probably a senior studio major, takign a break from a long night of art making, having a smoke. I might have just glanced up and not thought twice about it, but there was just enough light coming from her studio to reveal that she wasn't wearing any clothes. I stopped and wondered what she was doing in her studio. Was the bright light for photography? Was she making a series of nude self-portraits (not that uncommon for college photography majors), or was she painting nude?

I stood in the darkness of the alley, long enough to watch her finish the smoke. She slipped off the window ledge, and I could no longer see her, so I left. But the image has stayed with me.

AT THE RIVER

I know a secret trail to the river. It's about a 2 mile hike from the road, but it's a nice place to get away and be out in nature. Apparently, I wasn't the only one with that idea.

My Hippie Neighbor

The young woman who lives nextdoor to me is a bit of a hippie, a granola, whatever you want to say. She grows her own veggies in her backyard. In the summers, I see her out working in her garden. We wave and sometimes chat. She's often barefoot, and I don't know if she even owns a bra. On hot days, she wears tank tops. It's easy to see the outline of her nipples. When it's hot, she glows with sweat, and when she raises her arms to knot her hair back into a bun, I can see the dew drops of fresh sweat glistening in her underarm hair. With a slight shift of breeze, I catch a whiff of the sweet, tangy scent. She doesn't wear deodorant, and she smells beautiful. It's a smell that's distinct, earthy, like a flower, and not offensive in anyway. It's not at all an old BO stink like a locker room--no, it's like a tomato plant, sweet, pungent, and fresh. I think I may be developing a crush, an innocent crush, on my neighbor.

I've noticed that when I'm out in my garden, I've taken to wearing only thin skirts, and t-shirts or tanks. No bra. No deodorant. Why bother when you know working outside you'll just get sweaty anyway? I've stopped shaving. I feel sexier than I ever have.

BEACH QUICKIE

This couple apparently thought that they were alone and out of sight on the beach. She pulled his erection out of his shorts and pulled her bikini bottom aside as she rolled over onto him to ride him hard and fast. She loved the thrill of being outdoors, she loved having quickies with clothes still on, and she especially loved the danger of getting caught.

SUMMER SHORTS

When it gets hot, sometimes women skip underwear and just slip on shorts. And sometimes, at just the right angle, you notice.

THE NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR

Before we moved, we lived next door to a family that had a swimming pool and a daughter who was once my babysitter. She always seemed so much older than me. When she was my babysitter, she must have been only a sixth grader, maybe 12 or 13 at the most, yet she was given the full authority of the house and the responsibility of a grown up when my parents left. I of course feared, respected, and mostly obeyed her authority when I was young. By the time I was in sixth grade, and no longer needed a babysitter, she was in high school. My attention to her had changed as my interested turned toward girls--though I knew nothing about them, hadn't dated any, hadn't even kissed one. So it fascinated me to spy on her whenever I could. My favorite was after school, before either of our parents had come home from work. On hot days, she would lay out beside the pool, unaware of my curious eyes, and the lessons she was teaching me.

LIFT UP

One of the very sexiest sights to possibly see is on a beach, when a woman has loosened her bikini top for tanning, and laying on her stomach drifts off in the warm sun. Then, someone calls her and she lifts her head, still sleepy, letting her eyes adjust. The sun makes everything slower. She's trying to hear what her friend is yelling over the crashing of the waves. She doesn't realize she's lifted her head just a bit too high, maybe only an inch, but it is just enough.

STUDENT STAIRS

Outside the University are some old stone stairs. When the weather turned warm in spring, the students would sit on the stairs between classes, some would read, some make phone calls, some chat with friends, or just take a break. It felt like liberation to see the girls wear fewer and fewer clothes--tank tops and short skirts. The warm weather and new flowers gave everyone a vigor of spring, the sexual energy that comes this time of year.

I was admiring one especially beautiful student on a break. She was sitting with her back pack in her lap, but she as wearing a skirt, and I knew if I cold get directly in front of her, I might have a small chance of catching a glimpse of her panties. Sometimes it's fun to try to guess what color panties a girl will be wearing, then steal a glance when she bends over or crosses her legs. The usual white? A flash of baby blue? Pink was always common.

Secretly, as I walked passed, I snapped a photo, trying to get as direct a line up her skirt as possible. I was disappointed at first, because her legs were held so close together, I thought there wold be no way to tell what color panties she wore. To my surprise, when I looked at the photo in full rez, I realized she had gone to school that day with no panties at all!
TRAIN PEEK

Riding on the high-speed trains of Spain. The girl in front of me was so lovely, and so engrossed in her book, she had not idea how much of her breast she was exposing. Or maybe she did.

VINTAGE LESBIANS

REAR WINDOW

While travelling on business, I looked out my hotel window and spotted a couple in a window of a hotel across the street. They were locked in embrace, and I watched as his hands unclasped her bra and tugged down her pants. I probably shouldn't have stayed and watched, but I couldn't take my eyes off of them. And I wondered if they didn't actually want to be watched. Surely they knew that as they pressed against the window in broad daylight that someone could have spotted them from one of the hundreds of windows. Maybe that was part of the thrill for them. It was certainly part of the thrill for me, glad to play the role of voyeur to their exhibitionism.

HUMAN SEXUALITY, 101

In the late '60s and '70s, there wasn't as much sex education in schools. There were a few books on the subject that had been published, but most were fairly dry and clinical. Without internet, the only porn was the fairly modest men's magazines. (Keep in mind, Playboy only began to show pubic hair in the late '60s.) Learning about sex, real sex, was left to friends. Lynda, an entrepreneurial college student, realized the niche she could fill by inviting fellow students (and some professors) over to her house for open discussion and demonstrations of human sexuality.

HAPPY CAMPERS

When you're camping in a remote area, there's an assumption of privacy. Sometimes, when you're fast into the moment of making love, taken by the action at hand, you don't notice the soft sound of hikers on the trail, slowly passing by, pausing for a moment to eavesdrop and snap a photo.

SINGLE IN THE CITY

When she was single and living in her apartment in uptown Minneapolis, she saw no point in putting on clothes to make her breakfast. Not even trying to date, she'd also ditched her razor. She'd let her hair grow out naturally, and she liked not worrying about it. It was more natural and easier, anyway. She kept her blinds drawn, mostly. And if anyone saw, whatever.
